Drugstore Cowboy
Published in Paperback by Aardvark Enterprises (June, 1995)
Average review score:

Trip to the DrugstoreThe literature spent on professional criminals is long and illustrious. From "In the Belly of the Beast", to "The Fox is Crazy, too", to Edward Bunker's latest masterpiece, "The Education of a Felon", the world of prison and violent crime is explored in full. Fogle, however, takes us into the world on the absolute bottom feeders on the criminal food chain: the dope fiends. Not to be confused with the crack whore-type addicts, who rely upon someone else to provide them with their fix, Fogle's addicts by-pass the middle man and go right to the source. They knock off drug stores and shoot whatever they can find into their veins. Fogle's greatest feat is that, in this age of ceaseless moralizing and condemnation of vice, he can make us care for the people he writes about. Without providing excuses for the activity or claiming to be a victim of misunderstanding, he shows us the real people underneath the characature The story is one that takes the reader into a chemical hell that most will probably never know, but is ultimately the story of redemption, a redeption of the soul and a personal triumph over the evils of society.

Early Fur Trade on the Northern Plains: Canadian Traders Among the Mandan and Hidatsa Indians, 1738-1818
Published in Hardcover by Univ of Oklahoma Pr (Txt) (September, 1985)
Average review score:

ExcellentThis is a well written and engaging look into the importance of the Mandan and Hidatsa Indian villages as a pivotal point in trade systems during the late 1700's through early 1800's. Being located along the Missouri River in present day North Dakota, the Mandan/Hidatsa Indians traded horses, robes and furs to Canadian Fur Companies in return for guns and ammunition. They would then trade these goods for other commodities from various Northern Plains Indian Tribes, who previously may have traded with other tribes or the Spaniards further south. In part one, the authors give a lengthy but excellent and relevant chronological introduction as to the fur trade history of this geographical area. Part two includes five journals (or excerpts) of some of these Northwest Fur Company traders' first hand accounts depicting life as it was: John Macdonell's descriptions of the Indians, geography and trade in the 1790's; David Thompson's narrative describing his harrowing 1797 journey from Fort Assiniboine to the Mandan villages in the dead of winter; Larocque's two narratives, the "Missouri (1804)" and "Yellowstone (1805)" Journals, the latter of which, in the company with Crow Indians, he may possibly have been the first white man to descend the Yellowstone River, pre-dating William Clark by more than a year. The final narrative is of Charles McKenzie's four journeys to the Mandan villages (1804-1806), the first two in company with Larocque's expeditions. This is a fascinating read for fur trade enthusiasts and/or those whose interests are in early western exploration.

Empress of Britain: Canadian Pacific's Greatest Ship
Published in Hardcover by Boston Mills Press (June, 1994)
Average review score:

The definitive history of the 1930s greatest cruise shipGordon Turner has written a worthy tribute to Canadian Pacific's flagship RMS Empress of Britain of 1931. This splendid looking vessel was the first large liner built for both crossing and cruising and the author has done an excellent job of telling the ship's story from inception to construction and then a year to year account of her world-girding cruises and Atlantic crossings (from Quebec to Southampton) and her glamourous passengers. The book is extremely attractive with superb photographs, many never published before. The illustrations of the ship's magnificent public rooms are of special interest. Fascinating appendices give all of the ship's technical details. The saddest part of the book, of course, is the complete account of her tragic loss during the early days of the Second World War when she was bombed by the Luftwaffe. Empress of Britain was the largest Allied merchantman sunk the war. The likes of her will never be seen again and Mr. Turner is to be congratulated for telling her story with such affection and attention.

Execution is ExcelenceWhen I read this book, it was spectacular. You could really tell what the characters where thinking and how they felt about the events of the book. At the end of the book I truley felt for these characters. That is what made this book spectacular. This is great writing and the best I have read in awhile. All I will tell you is that the ending is worth the book. I won't say anymore because I don't want to spoil this great ending for any of you out there who would like to buy this great book. Fallen Soldiers
Published in Paperback by Aardvark Enterprises (September, 1994)
Average review score:

The Myth of the War ExperienceThis book is by now a classic of cultural history and a 'must' for anyone wanting to understand the 20th century. The book describes The Myth of the War Experience' as one of the fundamental values influencing the post WWI world. Much emphasis is made on the commemoration of fallen soldiers in Germany, France and Britain. Mosse investigates cemeteries, monuments and ceremonies and describes 'The Cult of the Fallen Soldier' in its different manifestations during the war and mainly after it. The book shows the intellectual and cultural roots of this myth - the concepts of 'Camaraderie' 'Manliness' and 'Youth' on one hand and Christian piety on the other. The decline of the 'Myth of the War Experience' after the second world war is also dealt in this book. All in all the book makes compelling reading is worth every minute.

Far Eastern Tour: The Canadian Infantry in Korea, 1950-1953
Published in Hardcover by McGill-Queens University Press (October, 2002)
Average review score:

What living amid such combat was likeFar Eastern Tour: The Canadian Infantry In Korea 1950-1953 by Brent Byron Watson (History Teacher, Okanagan University College) is a tautly written and serious-minded examination and history of Canada's involvement in the Korean War, including the hardships Canadian infantry suffered which included inappropriate training, stark living and combat conditions, and the deadly blood toll of the war itself. Far Eastern Tour is very highly recommended as being an extensively researched, carefully written, and scholarly accurate look into what living amid such combat was like, the pressures it demanded, and the extraordinary people who faced the horrors of war and did not back down from what had to be done.
